Uganda Christian University’s 27th Guild Government has elected new parliamentary leadership following a competitive virtual election session on December 30. The election was presided over by Rt: Hon. Emmanuel Edonu, the outgoing Speaker of the 26th Students’ Guild Parliament.
Joseph Michael Tenywa, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the School of Law, emerged victorious with 45.5% of the votes cast.
His closest competitors included Marvin Murungi, also MP for the School of Law, who secured 13.6%; Lawrence Mukiibi William, MP for Special Needs, with 9.1%; Mulangira Benny McCarthy, MP for Non-Residents (Male), who garnered 22.7%; and Isaiah Tom Opio, MP for the Faculty of Business, with 9.1%.
In the race for the Deputy Speaker, Betty Takali won with 50% of the vote and was officially announced as the Deputy Speaker for the 27th Guild Government.
Other leadership positions were also filled, with Victor Enoch Masiga being named Chief Whip and Maxensia Asio voted in as his assistant.
In his message, the outgoing speaker, Emmanuel Edonu reminded the new parliamentary leaders about holding to the values that bind the guild parliament.
“I urge each of you to hold fast to the values that bind us: respect, empathy, and a steadfast commitment to serving the people,” Wrote Edonu.
The 27th Guild Government, led by Guild President H.E. Samantha Mwesigye, is set to assume office early next year.
President Mwesigye is expected to announce her cabinet, which the new Guild Parliament will vet.
