The Uganda Christian University (UCU) teams continued to dominate on day two of the East African University Games hosted by Maseno University in Kenya. With remarkable performances across various disciplines, UCU athletes demonstrated their prowess, securing victories and podium finishes in several categories.
Rugby 7s
Despite a narrow loss to the Technical University of Mombasa (17-12), UCU redeemed itself with a thrilling 26-19 win over Maseno University. In the semi-finals, UCU fell to Uganda Martyrs University in a close 12-17 match but will face Kisi University in the third-place playoffs.
Football
The UCU women’s football team triumphed with a resounding 6-0 victory against KCA University at halftime, thanks to four goals from Jovia Nakagolo and two from Harima Kanyago. However, the men’s team narrowly lost 0-1 to Makerere University in their match.
Basketball and Netball
UCU’s basketball Lady Canons showcased dominance, crushing Makerere University 46-9. The UCU Angels netball team added to the glory with a sweeping 75-24 win against Kenyatta University, marking their second consecutive victory in the tournament.
Table Tennis
Irene Teddy of UCU clinched a 3-0 victory against Maseno University in the ladies’ singles, while Flavia Amaniyo secured a 3-0 win against Ndejje University, solidifying UCU’s strength in table tennis.
Lawn Tennis
UCU’s lawn tennis players delivered stellar performances:
Frank Tayebwa defeated United States International University 6-0.
Priscilla Naigano swept Mbarara University 6-0.
Trevor Kazibwe, the team captain, triumphed over Maseno University with a 6-1 win.
Track and Field
UCU athletes dominated the track:
Bridget Mbwale and Charity Atiang claimed first place in the 100m and 200m women’s races, respectively.
Shariff Lipa clinched the 100m men’s race, with Santos Okabo securing second place in the 100m and third in the 200m.
Joseph Okolimo emerged victorious in the 200m men’s race.
UCU’s exceptional performances highlight their determination and competitiveness at the East African University Games. As the tournament progresses, UCU remains a formidable contender across various disciplines.
