UCU graduate launches book days after graduation

In the world of writing, passion comes first. However, one has to have the ability to read and understand different genres. That is the only way one can pick an interest and have the skills.

Growing up as a child, Edwin Kyle Kule enjoyed composing poems, sports, and reading. One of the things he enjoyed reading was content from spiritual crafters. He mentions,’ My favourite spiritual crafter was Mark Finley’. This is because he is a televangelist who talks about related content.

Edwin has always enjoyed sports-related stories, and he is currently a sports journalist and a lover of sports. He says,’Sports is my drug. However, he also loves reading stories about mental health issues in society because these stories reveal more about what people actually go through in their daily lives behind closed doors, and therefore, such stories are an inspiration to everyone.

In 2020, Edwin participated in writing competitions organised by the United Nations (UN), and he acquired a certificate. On January 18, 2020, he won an award as the Best Teen Writer. These competitions took place at Merryland High School. Ever since this award, Edwin has never looked back regarding his writing career.

Edwin graduated in 2023 from Uganda Christian University with a degree in journalism, media, and communication. He, however, decided to launch his first book, Unveiling Your True Self,” on October 27th, the same day of his graduation. This was to act as an inspiration to other young student writers that you can win twice.

The book ” Unveiling Your True Self” is basically about a journey of self-discovery, as he calls it. He wrote this book to enable readers to find out and understand themselves,  improve themselves, and grow personally. He says, There is a you, but there is a true you,” and therefore, one should understand themselves better.

Just like any other writer, he faced challenges compiling this book, for example, discouragement from a few people since he is a young writer and most writers are older people because society believes they have something to say. Another challenge was a shortage of funds because the budget was high. He also lost drafts of the book twice, totaling around 56 pages. This somehow demotivated him, but he later got support from a friend, and he continued with the journey. This is why the book took one and a half years to be completed.

Kule wrote this book during a period when he was still pursuing his degree at Uganda Christian University; therefore, balancing school and his writing wasn’t easy, so he decided to write once in a while, that is, during the night, when off campus, and maybe on weekends, which he termed ” chopping around time” passionately.

Haulah Najjuka, a friend of Kule, describes Kule as a hardworking and ambitious man. She says that this book revealed his growth as a young man. She says,He is meant for the stars, and he doesn’t know it yet, and it is great that he is trying out new things apart from sports-related activities. I am happy for him.”.

Edwin believes writing makes one better, and one of his wishes is if he could take back time and become a ghost writer and narrator when he had time. This would have benefited his writing career.

He therefore argues for all young writers to put up their work so that they can see their mistakes and be better writers.

    “Sticking to what you want”
