When Samantha Mwesigye took over power and became the 27th Guild President of the Uganda Christian University (UCU) Guild Government, she laid out a four-point manifesto targeting accountability, student life, tuition and security.
Missing an exam is one of the most unsettling experiences a student can face. For me, it wasn’t just a test; it was the final step in a journey I had planned meticulously like any other student would. I had always set educational goals for myself, worked hard to achieve them on time, and was confident as I began my final semester of Uganda Christian University’s Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Communication programme.
It began innocently. The student recounts how he was introduced to codeine through international students, particularly Nigerians, during his university years.
The issue of drug and substance use is becoming increasingly prevalent in our society, especially in schools and universities. Many children are involved in drug use, yet parents often remain unaware of what is happening in their lives.
A particularly alarming case involved a student who took crystal meth and spent two days playing PlayStation nonstop. “He blacked out and only woke up the next day in the afternoon,” said another student who witnessed the incident.
She says her first day in Uganda was filled with uncertainty as she and other exchange students upon arrival at the airport, were immediately transported to the campus with very little knowledge of their new surroundings.
Thus, the news of the establishment of the Uganda Christian University (UCU)-Kagando College sent a strong wave of hope and excitement both within the UCU fraternity and the Kasese, western region, community.
The Hamu Mukasa Library was officially opened on the 28th of October, 2011 by the Late Ambassador Jerry P. Lanier, one of the former US ambassadors in Uganda and a serving US diplomat in Sub Saharan Africa. It was named after the former Chief of Kyagwe County in the Kingdom of Buganda for his contribution made through the donation of the land where the university now sits.
