The 28th Guild President of Uganda Christian University (UCU) has been sworn in alongside Members of Parliament in a ceremony held this afternoon at Nkoyoyo Hall. The function was presided over by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration (DVC F&A), Mr. David Mugawe.

In his remarks, Mr. Mugawe urged the new leaders to serve with diligence and integrity, drawing inspiration from 1 Timothy 4:13. He also addressed the recent petition filed by the camp of Bright Atuhaire, noting that the matter was procedurally listened to and given a fair hearing.

“There was a ruling that was passed, and it’s on the basis of that ruling that we’re having this occasion today,” Mugawe said.

Speaking during the ceremony, Rev. Dr Simon Feta, chaplain of the School of Nursing encouraged the new leaders to always remain in fellowship. He also urged the leaders to hold first to their relationship with God ahead of their service. “It will be foolishness for you to swear in the name of the cross, and you’re not in the cross.”

Electoral Commission Chairperson Kwajje Asunta Aggrey advised the incoming leaders to use their offices to honour God and maintain close collaboration with the office of the Director of Student Affairs (DOSA)

“If I am to whisper a word to the incoming leaders, I would say this, work with the office of the DOSA.” she said.

President Elomaboni took his oath amid loud cheers from his supporters. However, outgoing Guild President Samantha Mwesigye and several key members of her cabinet were notably absent.

Among top student leaders, only Vice Guild President Elton Mwidu and Guild Speakers Rt Hon. Joseph Michael Tenywa and Betty Takali attended the ceremony.

Commenting on the turn of events, Atuhaire who petitioned the election results, said the tribunal’s ruling did not come as a surprise.

He clarified that their petition was never directed at President Elomaboni but at longstanding issues within UCU’s electoral procedures. Atuhaire said their push for reforms will continue. ‘’We are going to proceed to challenge for better times to come, we want students to contest in the future and they are sure of fairness in electoral process,’ says Atuhaire “We are still processing everything, and once all is complete, it will be communicated to the public,” he adds.
