With many teams expecting a better season, the FUFA Women’s Super League is set to resume on February 17.
The UCU Lady Cardinals will be facing the Luzira side, the She Maroons, on February 18 at 10 a.m. at UCU Sports Ground,Mukono.
Mukono-based Mukono lost three key players on the team: first-choice goalkeeper Hadijah Nalongo, vice captain Apio Faith, and former Crested Cranes assistant captain Bridget Nabisalu.
Nalongo, who was signed by She Corporates FC, has already featured in two games for the second-tier side, while Apio and Nabisalu joined the Maroons.
Club CEO Mercy Nabulobi revealed to New Vision Sports that the departing players will be missed.
“Nabisalu has been out for the first half of the season; she will be missed, but we have found a perfect replacement: Aloyo, who has featured in our previous games; Apio Faith, who has been a team captain, and her absence will be felt; and of course, Nalongo, who has been our first choice goalkeeper.”
UCU relies on youngsters to replace the departing players.
“We are confident that Mercy Amoding, who has recently featured with the senior team, will fill the void left by Apio, Pamela Nalugemwa from Divine Soccer Academy, as well as Nasimbwa Cathy,” she added.
Goalkeeping boost.
“Our second choice, Natasha, will be elevated to the first choice position while the new entrant, Akayo Anitah, who has been our third choice goalkeeper, steps up as our new second choice goalkeeper.”
The team will also be boosted by the full return of Sarah Abonyo, who, on her return, scored a goal against She Makerere Women’s Football Club. The latter also featured in a pre-season friendly match against the St. Noah Girls that ended in a one-all draw.
The Lady Cardinals took a break while accumulating 12 points in nine games and holding fifth place on the FWSL log.
