The Uganda Christian University (UCU) Cardinals have beaten the Makerere University Enzymes to win gold at the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) games. The Cardinals and Enzymes went back and forth in normal time, and the game ended in a goalless draw.
The referee called in for penalties and the Cardinals goalkeeper, Elton Mwidu rose to the task, making two saves with another going over the bar and the final attempt hitting the woodwork. After 5 attempts from the spot, the Makerere side had only converted one shot while the Cardinals had two from the four shots they took.
After the final penalty was missed, Mwidu rushed out of the goalposts to meet his oncoming teammates for the celebration. He took off his jersey, and underneath it was a base layer shirt with an imprint, Footballers put your trust in God.
He further said that he uses moments like these to share the message of faith with the people around him in what he brands as Sports evangelism. He went ahead to attribute his success wholly to God, avoiding giving credit to any other inputs and strategies that could have been made in the buildup to the game. “My beginning is God, my end is God, my foundation is God, there’s no one I can credit for this victory,” he said.
Today marks the final day of this year’s AUUS competitions, and UCU had six different finals to be played. The victory of the Cardinals completed a game-winning streak today with the other finals seeing the Canons and Lady Canons beating Victoria University in both finals, the UCU Angels beating Kampala University in Netball, the Doves and Lady Doves beating their male and female counterparts both from Kampala University in the volleyball finals.
