OC cautions students on keeping safe on campus

The Assistant Superintendent of Police, Esseri Kusiima, the Officer in Charge of the Uganda Police post at Uganda Christian University (UCU), has issued a security advisory to students ahead of the new semester.

She gave these measures emphasising that it is one’s role as an individual to ensure that they keep their security

“Some students neglect that role because their hostels assure them of security,” she said. According to Kusiima, UCU students are a prime target for law breakers in the Mukono area and this requires them to be cautious. She warned students to be cautious of others who have already graduated, to avoid moving in isolation, leaving one’s keys behind, giving away gadgets like laptops, and lending money.

“Not everyone you meet in UCU is on a study mission, some graduated but remained to target your expensive phones,” she warned.

The custodian of Nsibambi Hall, Mr. Rogers Kisa reiterated Kusiima’s advice saying that a number of students entertain outsiders in their rooms not knowing their motives until they experience loss. He also said they also handle their keys without proper care.

“They need to be more vigilant of these loopholes to keep guard of their property. They should not leave copies of their keys on top of their door posts, that’s what intruders use to gain access to their rooms,” Kisa shared.

He stressed that students should keep their rooms under lock and key even when stepping away for a minute. Over and above the security tips, Kisa encouraged all students to keep phone numbers of the Police lines at the university Police post as well as those of their respective members. These, he said, come in handy in case of emergencies.
