OpEd: Your voice your vote your future.

This Thursday, Uganda Christian University (UCU) goes to the polls to elect the 28th Guild Government including the Guild President and Members of Parliament who will represent students for the 2025–2026 academic year. This is a call to every student to take part in shaping the leadership that will speak and act on their behalf.

Elections are the cornerstone of representation. Yet, many young people have grown disillusioned, believing their single vote makes no difference. The truth is, it does. The leaders elected make decisions that affect students daily from how their concerns are raised before the administration to how student life is managed. Sitting out of this process is surrendering your voice; participating is reclaiming it.

This week’s elections should not only determine who leads the UCU student fraternity, but also prepare us for a greater civic duty, the General Elections of 2026. In a few months, Uganda will once again choose its President, Members of Parliament, and local government leaders. The same principles that guide our campus election — integrity, accountability, and service — must also guide us as citizens.

Voting is a responsibility. It is the simplest, most peaceful way to influence the direction of your community and your nation. Each vote cast is an act of hope and a declaration that you care about the future and are willing to play your part in shaping it.

The former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.” Once we have this right, we must claim and use it.

So, to every UCU student, show up. Vote for the person of your choice. Do not fold your arms or leave your future to chance. Leadership begins here and it begins with your vote.
