The Uganda Christian University (UCU) Electoral Commission (EC) this afternoon officially launched the 28th Guild Government Elections and Civic Education Exercise at an event held in the ICMI building. The ceremony attracted aspiring candidates, Guild officials, and members of the student community.

During the launch, Karen Hapuch, an Administrative Assistant from the Office of the Director of Student Affairs, who represented the Directorate, urged participants to adhere to the guidelines issued by the Commission. She also emphasised the importance of candidates being well-informed about matters relevant to their respective constituencies.

“You cannot contest as an MP for Residents if you don’t know the University Residents’ Policy. There are things you must know,” she stated. “As a candidate, you should seek to add value,” she added.

Kwajje Aggrey Asunta, the EC Chairperson, explained that students contesting for Member of Parliament (MP) positions will undergo two stages of vetting — at their respective schools or faculties — while presidential candidates will face an additional vetting stage by the University Board.

During the question-and-answer session, Tamale Nkoyoyo, President of the Launchpad Debate Club, raised several questions and suggestions, including a proposal for the EC to recognise and reward losing candidates for their participation.

“It’s not fair for a student to contest, spend their time and money on an election, and then walk away empty-handed,” he remarked. Responding to Nkoyoyo, Hapuch acknowledged his concerns.

A significant announcement made during the event was the creation of a new constituency for postgraduate students, who will now have representation in the 28th Guild Parliament.

According to the roadmap, the election season begins with today’s launch and civic team briefing, followed by the start of civic education on 10th October. The application period will run from 10th to 17th October.

Vetting of parliamentary and presidential candidates will take place on 23rd and 27th October, respectively, with presidential aspirants undergoing an additional Joint Board vetting on 29th October. Parliamentary and presidential debates are scheduled for 7th and 10th November, respectively.

Polling will be held on 13th November, and the swearing-in ceremony for the new government will take place on 27th November 2025.
