Uganda Christian University Angels enjoyed a perfect weekend in the Uganda Netball Super League, securing back-to-back wins against Busia Lions and UPDF Netball Club to tighten their grip on a top-four spot and boost their hopes of qualifying for the East Africa Club Championship.
The Angels began their campaign on Saturday, 8th November, with a 50–34 victory over Busia Lions at the Busia Greater Lions Netball Arena. Despite the long journey and tight scheduling, UCU displayed composure and control throughout the match to record a comfortable 16-goal win.
Team captain Linda Muziigo said the team’s focus and preparation were key to their success in Busia.
“We requested for the game to be played two hours earlier, and that helped us manage the long trip and still perform well. Many people said Busia is a strong team, and indeed they have improved, but our experience helped us control the game and secure the win,” she said.
Barely 24 hours later, on Sunday, 9th November, UCU returned to action at HAMZ Stadium Nakivubo to face UPDF Netball Club. Despite visible fatigue from travel and minor injuries from the previous game, the Angels put up another commanding display to win 56–45.
UPDF started stronger, leading 12–11 after the first quarter as UCU struggled to find their rhythm. In the second quarter, the Angels regrouped and took control, scoring 15 goals to UPDF’s 11 to go into halftime with a 26–23 advantage.
The third quarter saw a tactical shift from head coach Nelson Bogere, who introduced goal attacker Josephine Nabulya for Eileen Ategeka Mukama. The change added more energy and precision in attack, allowing UCU to extend their lead to 43–34.
By the final quarter, the Angels were in full control, outscoring UPDF by 11 goals to seal a convincing 56–45 win and cap off a successful weekend.
Captain Muziigo praised the team’s resilience and mentality through the demanding back-to-back fixtures.
“Even though we were coming from Busia, the fatigue didn’t stop us from achieving our target. UPDF is a strong team, especially in the first two quarters, but we stayed focused,” she said.
She added that the two victories were crucial to UCU’s season goals.
“These two games were key for our top-four hopes. We knew we had to win them. Some players were carrying injuries from the Busia game, but everyone gave their best. We now feel comfortable in the top four, but we know more work lies ahead.”
Angels will return to action on Saturday, 15th November, when they face Prisons Netball Club in another crucial fixture.
“We don’t minimise any team. We treat every opponent with the same respect and intensity. Come next game, we are going to display another strong performance as UCU Angels,” Muziigo said.
