UCU Cardinals edge past 10-men Nkumba

The Uganda Christian University Cardinals had a moment of redemption today as they edged past Nkumba University in a narrow 1–0 victory. This scintillating encounter took place on Bishop Primary School grounds.

The win gives Kintu’s side a much-needed boost as they rally themselves to play the last game of the group stages. They now, as the hosts, can walk with much more stamina, having redeemed themselves against yesterday’s infamous loss to Makerere. The redemption, though, will not be complete until total victory is achieved in their final game. For now, they will tread carefully, hope, and work for victory. Their home advantage and league experience will serve as impeccable grounds for leverage.

Having managed to turn the tables in this clash, the Cardinals will be hopeful to continue in winning ways. This, at least, will be expected of them by the large pool of their fans on the home turf.

After a brief holdup of about 30 minutes, the players were thoroughly checked, and the center referee, Henry Musisi, whistled this much-awaited game to a start. The Cardinals were starting this game without their captain and fan favorite, Gaggaga, who was forced off in the previous game.

UCU started the game on a high note, dictating possession as they took the ball to Nkumba. It did not take long for the Cardinals’ press to bear fruit. In the 34th minute, Ofoyrowth Isaac sent a teasing ball to Aditi Henry, who turned the defender inside out, only to be fouled by the Nkumba keeper, Ogwana John Andrew.

With concession from the match commissioner, Ssemamba Aisha, the center referee, Musisi Henry, did not only point to the spot for the Cardinal’s penalty; he also showed a red card to Andrew Ogwana.

Ofoyrwoth Isaac stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but his weak effort was saved by the keeper. With the save, the Cardinals had just thrown their clearest chance in the game. Nkumba managed to hold off the Cardinals until the first half of the game ended.

In the second half of the game, Aditi Henry found himself in miles of space after a well-worked ball from the full back. Namaisi Stephen found him in the final third. He composed himself and confidently tucked the ball home.

After this game, the cardinals held off Nkumba to register their first win after losing their previous encounter against Makerere.

UCU Coach Kintu Jimmy acknowledged that the slip-up against Makerere took a psychological toll on the players ahead of today’s clash.

“Coming into today’s game was a bit tricky for us; there were a lot of mixed feelings, but we had no option; we only had to come here and do everything correctly, and we won this game, and that’s what we just did,” said Coach

Speaking about Gaggaga’s absence, the coach acknowledged that his unavailability leaves a big hole in the side but that they must learn to work and play even without the beloved captain.

Dr. Suleiman Bbosa, the head coach of Nkumba, narrowed their defeat to the red card, missed opportunities, and acknowledged the Cardinals’ defensive abilities.

“We conceded the goal, and we tried to comeback, but UCU were a bit strong on offense,” said Bbosa. Now we go into the last game looking for the win, and Makerere can be assured that we shall take the ball to them,” continued Bbosa.
