Uganda Christian University volleyball teams, the UCU Doves and UCU Lady Doves, began their AUUS Games campaign with straight-set victories as they push to defend their 2023 gold medals.
The UCU Doves opened their campaign with a 3–0 win over Kampala University. They controlled the match from the first serve and kept pressure on their opponents throughout.
The men’s set scores reflected their dominance. UCU won the first set 25–15, followed by 25–13 in the second, and sealed the match with a 25–14 finish in the third set.
The UCU Lady Doves matched the men’s performance with a convincing 3–0 win against Makerere University Business School. The defending champions showed composure and discipline, especially in key moments.
The Lady Doves took the first set 25–17. MUBS offered stronger resistance in the second set, but UCU held firm to win 25–21. The third set ended 25–17, sealing a confident start to the tournament.
Lady Doves captain Daphine Kukundakwe credited preparation and squad depth for the strong performance.
“I think, according to how we prepared, we were set for that game. We had some additions to our team,” she said.
She highlighted the impact of new players.
“We had two girls added to our team, and that was a big supplement. We are eager for our other group game on Sunday, and we think we are going to defend our trophy,” Kukundakwe added.
UCU Doves captain Elly Naguma said teamwork and preparation shaped their approach.
“The main point is we have been preparing for these games. We put in efforts and trained as a team. We came knowing we would put on a good show for the school and the fans,” he said.
Naguma pointed to the integration of players from Sport-S as a key factor.
“We managed to combine with our players from Sport-S. They added energy. We studied our opponents, knew their weakness, and built on it,” he said.
Looking ahead, Naguma said the team remains focused.
“Last year we had a challenge with Bugema, but now we know we are capable of taking the trophy again,” he said.
Both teams return to action in their next group matches as UCU continues its title defence.
