The Uganda Christian University badminton ladies’ team has defended their title at the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) games this morning after humbling their final competitors, Makerere University Business School (MUBS), with a 3-0 victory.
After defeating Ndejje University in yesterday’s encounter, the duo of Kruthum Nalumansi and Fridah Mbuya returned to the court today and convincingly humbled the ladies from MUBS, not allowing them to finish even with 10 points from the six sets played.
In the first single, Nalumansi went against MUBS’ Belinda Nabbumba, and took her out after two sets, winning 21-7 and 21-3. Mbuya replicated Nalumansi’s performance and beat Natalia Atukunda for MUBS, finishing 21-9 and 21-4. In the double round, Nalumansi and Mbuya cemented their victory with another overwhelming result beating the MUBS duo 21-4 and 21-5 respectively.
The result means the UCU ladies have remained as the only unbeaten side in the category of the Badminton contest in the AUUS games this year. The experience of winning this title is not a shock, given that the team came into the tournament as defending champions, though Nalumansi still says that the result brings a renewed sense of excitement.
The ladies outclassed all their opponents, but Nalumansi mentioned that her singles against Ndejje University gave her a run for this victory. Moving past today’s wins, the team awaits major challenges in the coming year. “We’re looking forward to the All-Africa University games in Egypt and the East Africa University games in Dodoma,” Nalumansi said. On the path to excellence, the team will be going to both tournaments as defending champions.
