UCU Lady Cardinals Relegated from the FUFA Women’s Super League

The Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Cardinals have been relegated from the FUFA Women’s Super League after a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Rines SS WFC. Despite a valiant effort from Jovia Nakagolo, who scored in the 36th minute, a ruthless double by Catherine Wujja sealed UCU’s fate.

This relegation comes as a significant blow to the team, especially considering their status as the 2019 champions. Unfortunately, the second half of the season proved challenging for the Lady Cardinals, with a string of eight winless games (six losses and two draws) ultimately leading to their relegation.

Head Coach Francis Oketayot acknowledged the disappointment but was optimistic for the future. “It was a good game, and we had our chances,” he said. “However, Rines capitalised on theirs. While relegation is heartbreaking, we’ll regroup and focus on the upcoming Uganda Cup semi-finals.” Coach Oketayot remains confident in the team’s ability to bounce back stronger. Their final league game against Asubo Ladies, who are also relegated, serves as an opportunity to end the season on a positive note.

The news of UCU’s relegation comes amidst a thrilling climax to the FUFA Women’s Super League season. The championship race remains wide open, with Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC and Kampala Queens both in contention.
