Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Law has won the East African Unwanted
Witness Privacy Moot Court Competition, securing Uganda’s place at the top of one of
the region’s most competitive legal contests.
The regional moot took place on 24 September 2025 at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together top law schools from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
The UCU team, comprised of Ajambo Sandra (LLB3, Lead Counsel and Oralist),
Heather Stacy Kutamba (LLB3, Oralist), Eunice Nantongo Wangabira (LLB3,
Researcher), and Diana Nassuna (LLB3, Researcher), represented Uganda after
emerging victorious in the national finals on 15 September 2025.
According to Kutamba, the team’s journey began with rigorous selection in February,
where individual interviews and written submissions determined the team
composition.
Despite not knowing each other prior to the process, the students spent
months preparing for the moot, researching extensively, drafting written submissions,
and practicing oral arguments, all while balancing academic commitments.
Ajambo Sandra described the victory as the result of determination through a
demanding preparation process.
“This competition tested us beyond academics. The
research was intense and the pressure was real, but in the end, perseverance and
teamwork carried us through,” she said.

Kutamba reflected on the personal growth the experience offered,
“Standing before that final bench gave me confidence in my skills as an advocate. The moot taught me
discipline, teamwork, and resilience, lessons I will carry into my career”.
The students scooped two major awards, the Best Overall Team and Best Applicant
Memorial. Their win came with a cash prize of USD 1,500 and a fully funded trip to
represent East Africa at the Privacy Symposium Africa (PSA) in Lagos, Nigeria,
scheduled for 26–28 November 2025.
The Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot exposes law students to the complexities of
digital rights, privacy, and data protection, issues that are increasingly central to
governance, business, and human rights. The UCU team’s triumph demonstrates not
only their skill but also Uganda’s growing influence in regional debates on technology
and law.
The victory paves the way for the team to showcase their expertise on an
international stage during the PSA in Lagos.
