Eric David Adongo, a first-year student at Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Medicine, Mengo, pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, emerged the winner of the 100m race and the best overall athlete at the UCU sports gala held at the main campus on July 23, 2022.

In an interview with one of the reporters, Adongo said he felt proud of this win, although he expected it. “I prepared for this day.” I have been training for the past two weeks despite the fact that I had papers. I had to create a balance between athletics and books, and it is no surprise that God has granted me victory today,” Adongo said.

Talking about his history as an athlete, Adongo said it has not been an easy journey. He said that as an athlete since his primary school days, he has had to withdraw from races and matches due to muscle pain. “I have failed to play before because I was unfit, but today, I have been able to do well at football and also win the 100m race,” he said.

He aspires to be a fitness coach outside the medical world. With knowledge from his course, he hopes to help people improve their health. “Obesity and heart-related diseases are becoming an issue in our community and being able to help people will bring joy to me,” Adongo said.

Adongo said that as a student of medicine, he has not really had the chance to interact with students from other UCU campuses, but the sports gala made it possible for him to make more friends. “I have gained the much needed publicity because I intend to run for a position of leadership in the future,” he added.

He encouraged students to attend such events because they help them interact with students doing various courses.

The sports gala had participating students from Kampala campus, UCU School of Medicine, Mengo, and the Uganda Law Development Centre (LDC). Students engaged in different games such as football, volleyball, basketball, athletics, and chess.
