Uganda Christian University (UCU) students emerged victorious in multiple categories at the recently concluded Media Challenge Initiative Hub awards held in Kabalagala, showcasing strong performance across various media disciplines.

The awards, which attracted participants from various institutions, celebrated talent, innovation, teamwork and faith-driven excellence across radio, television, print and visual arts. UCU students stood out not only for their technical skills but also for their humility, resilience and deep sense of purpose.

Hannah Mwagale, who was crowned Best Radio Presenter, described the moment as deeply emotional and affirming. She credited weeks of intense preparation and teamwork for her success.

“It means a lot to me. I almost cried. It’s a stepping stone for me and it has helped me realise that if I keep going and remain confident in my abilities, I will get to where I am supposed to be in this career,” she said.

She added that despite the nerves, she gave her best during the competition, emphasizing that commitment and collaboration played a key role in the team’s performance.

Another standout winner was Nankunda Jean Ninah, who took home the award for Best TV Presenter. For her, the accolade was proof of untapped potential and the power of listening.

“Winning the Best TV Presenter means a lot to me and shows how far I can go if I tap into my potential. All I did was put my heart out and listen to my team members for the best results,” she noted.

In the Best Cartoonist category, Favor Maombi Veera, the MP for International Students, delivered a remarkable story of faith and rediscovery. Participating as an international student, she admitted she never expected to win.

“I never saw it coming. I doubted myself at first, but the skills were still in me. I participated just for fun, but I thank God for enabling me to win—not just second position, but overall best winner,” she said.

Veera described the experience as “fantabulous,” attributing her success entirely to God’s grace and her decision to follow her heart.

    The Power of Trying

Sulphine Mbambu, Media Link President and winner of Best Mini Feature Writer, highlighted the importance of courage and process over pressure.

“I did not approach the process expecting to win. I simply focused on writing my essay to the best of my ability. Winning this accolade reinforced an important lesson: you cannot succeed at what you never try,” she reflected.

She emphasized the value of seeking feedback, prayer and trusting the outcome.

    Excellence Across Media Platforms

UCU’s winning streak was further strengthened by Atim Joy, who emerged as Best Radio Reporter, reinforcing the university’s strength in broadcast journalism and field reporting.

The outstanding performance by UCU students at the Media Challenge Initiative Hub awards underscores the university’s commitment to nurturing skilled, ethical and faith-driven media professionals. Through mentorship, teamwork and hands-on exposure, students are empowered to compete confidently on national and international platforms.

As these young creatives continue to rise, their stories serve as inspiration to fellow students proof that preparation, belief, teamwork and faith can turn opportunities into milestones.
