    UCU transforming its walkways

Uganda Christian University (UCU) commenced its Easter semester on January 4, 2024. During the first week, students who arrived early expressed their appreciation for the remarkable strides the university has taken in enhancing its facilities.

The institution is dedicated to transforming its environment into a more aesthetically pleasing and conducive space for students’ lives.

In the preceding year, UCU proudly hosted the inter-university games, attracting participation from around thirty-eight universities. This event catalysed significant improvements across the campus.

Jimmy Siyasa, the acting head of communication at UCU, said it’s actually nothing new for UCU because they are moving according to the strategic direction the university ought to take, bearing a vision of being the centre of excellence in the heart of Africa.

Siyasa added that UCU’s excellence is not only to be realised in academics but in other areas such as infrastructure, ICT, greening, and beautification of the environment, and so the progress is something that has always existed in the university.

“I am happy that the vice chancellor, through the campus renewal initiative, which is yet to launch, is making swift progress towards this, and the community generally is super excited about what has happened so far and what is yet to happen.” Siyasa said

Taking up the challenge of hosting inter-university games, especially on short notice, also, in a way, challenged the university management to quicken up a couple of things that were already in process so that we could afford our guests the most beautiful hosting experience.

According to Siyasa, the university staff also appreciated the greenery of the campus, the water connection, and the power supply because there was no moment for a power surge or water shortage. They were pleased that 75% of the campus is paved, and they are working at 100%.

“The hosting of the AUUS games served as a catalyst for UCU to prioritise better infrastructure. I extend my appreciation to the vice chancellor for his unwavering commitment to implementing these improvements.” said Agira Birungi, UCU guild president of the 26th guild government.

Birungi said that the law faculty, in particular, has seen notable advancements; they expressed their support and dedication to collaborating closely with the administration to further enhance UCU’s overall atmosphere.

“I extend sincere gratitude to the UCU community for embracing our leadership. In the three months since assuming office, the experience has been truly beautiful, warm, and welcoming,” shared Birungi.

Tumwebaze Willson, a student pursuing a Bachelors in Divinity in his second year, shared his observations upon returning for the new semester. “I have noticed substantial enhancements, such as the beautifully landscaped university pitch and the addition of a public toilet—a commendable addition.” He observed.

“The introduction of signposts has significantly facilitated navigation, particularly within the business faculty. It’s now much easier to locate various sections,” remarked Willson.
