Kanyere Precious Diana, a second-year student at Uganda Christian University (UCU), has been thrust into the limelight after clinching the Best Radio Mini Feature Award at this year’s Media Challenge Awards. Her win is a testament to her storytelling prowess and her promising future in journalism.

Speaking about her journey to victory, Precious described the competition as both exciting and challenging. “It was an incredible opportunity to showcase my storytelling skills, meet new people, and gain valuable experience,” she said. She also lauded the vibrant and engaging atmosphere of the Media Challenge Initiative (MCI) competitions, which she noted strike a balance between being highly competitive and immensely supportive.

“The event provided a platform to learn from experts who served as judges, as well as from fellow participants,” Precious added.

The Media Challenge Initiative is a non-profit organization committed to equipping young journalists with practical media skills. Through its signature radio and television competitions, the initiative offers students exposure, networking opportunities, fellowships, and certificates of recognition. Founded by media enthusiasts who envisioned a well-rounded, skilled workforce for Uganda’s media industry, the program continues to inspire and empower young talent.

For Precious, the moment her name was announced as the winner of the Best Radio Mini Feature Award was surreal. “I didn’t expect to win, even though my classmates believed in me. This award has been one of the highlights of my year and has motivated me to keep telling impactful stories,” she said.

Although her team did not fare as well in the television category, Precious remains optimistic. “Despite the loss, we hope to do better next time,” she noted.

To journalism students contemplating participation in the MCI competitions, Precious offered heartfelt advice. “This is a chance to express your creativity, gain feedback, and improve your skills in a fun environment. Showcase your talents and remain open to learning.”

Her success at the Media Challenge Awards underscores her determination and passion for storytelling. As she continues to grow in her career, Precious Diana is undoubtedly a name to watch in Uganda’s media landscape.
