    UCU 2 – 1 YMCA

    By Michael Ainomugisha

Uganda Christian University (UCU) secured a crucial 2-1 victory over YMCA on March 3, 2025, at the UCU Grounds in Mukono, climbing to the top of Group C in the University Football League (UFL) with eight points.

The game began with an early setback for the hosts as Hakim Kanabi capitalized on a defensive error to put YMCA ahead in the 3rd minute.

However, UCU responded strongly, with Harry Abiti leveling the score in the 27th minute. Three minutes later, assistant captain Patrick Ogola turned the game in UCU’s favor with a well-taken penalty kick, giving the home side a 2-1 lead at halftime.

YMCA goalkeeper Isabirye Peter kept his team in contention with a crucial double save in the 43rd minute, denying UCU a chance to extend their lead before the break.

In the second half, UCU made tactical changes, introducing Bananywa Najib in the 68th minute for Ariaka Jordan and Haruna Nyanzi in the 74th minute for Opio Allan.

Despite dominating possession, UCU struggled to convert their chances, with Kyomuhendo Peter missing a golden opportunity in the 81st minute as Isabirye denied him once again.

At full-time, UCU’s 2-1 victory secured their position at the summit of Group C, setting up a decisive final group-stage clash against St. Lawrence University in Kavule.

Reacting to the result, UCU head coach Jimmy Kintu acknowledged the challenge posed by YMCA.

“It was a difficult game, as we expected. Conceding early made it tough for us, but we managed to stay composed. We knew that winning today was crucial to our qualification hopes, so we focused on managing the game and utilising our chances. While we converted key opportunities, we still need to be more clinical in front of goal, especially against stronger opponents who can punish us.” He said.

With one game left in the group stage, UCU will be aiming for another strong performance to secure a place in the knockout rounds.
