UCU Angels set for Uganda Netball Super League return

After a two-year hiatus, the Uganda Netball Super League is finally making its long-awaited comeback, with action set to tip off on April 5, 2025.

The return marks a significant moment for the netball fraternity, especially for teams like Uganda Christian University’s UCU Angels, who have been participating in university games, notably the AUUS 2023, finishing second and winning the Eastern African University Games 2024 in Maseno, Kenya.

Uganda Netball Super League last saw action on April 29, 2023, when Prisons Netball Club were crowned champions at the end of the 2022/23 season. However, the sport has since been marred by administrative turmoil, including the suspension of former Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) president Sarah Babirye Kityo and the intervention of World Netball.

With the election of Jocelyn Ucanda as the new federation president in October 2024, netball in Uganda is now entering a fresh chapter, and the Super League’s return is a testament to that transition.

For the UCU Angels, the break has been both a challenge and an opportunity. After finishing in the top half of the table in the last active season, they have had to navigate the uncertainty while maintaining their fitness and team spirit.

Team captain Linda Muzigo  is confident that their hard work will pay off.

“We’ve been training consistently. We haven’t been resting just because the league was on hold. We’ve been pushing regardless of what was coming ahead. When the league calendar was released, we expected a delay as usual, but that didn’t stop us from training.” She said.

Linda also commented on the anticipation of the league’s return.

“This is more than just a competition. We’ve played in university tournaments, but the league gives us a chance to face top players we once admired. Competing at this level fuels our passion and drive,” she added.

Angels will open their 2025 league against Dynamite Netball Academy at 11am, which also doubles as the league opener.
