The combined School of Journalism, Media and Communication (SJMC) and School of Social Sciences side secured third place in the Inter-Faculty Basketball tournament after defeating the School of Business 44–35 in a fixture played at UCU Court One on Thursday, 28 May.
Coached by UCU Canons shooting guard and vice-captain Zachariah Ekirappa, the SJMC and Social Sciences side put up a determined performance to seal the podium finish in a highly contested encounter.
The game, scheduled to tip off at 8:00 pm, started 30 minutes later after the School of Business coached by Fatumah Mwondah arrived late and without some of their key players. SJMC and Social Sciences took advantage of the situation early and maintained control for most of the contest.
To reach the third-place playoff, the School of Business had suffered a narrow 69–67 defeat to the School of Law, who staged a late comeback to snatch victory.
SJMC and Social Sciences had earlier lost 82–63 to the Faculty of Engineering, Design and Technology (FEDAT) in the semifinals. Despite trailing 43–18 at halftime, the side improved in the second half, limiting FEDAT to 39 points while scoring 45 themselves, but the effort was not enough to overturn the deficit.
FEDAT will now play the School of law on Friday, the 29th, in a highly anticipated final
In netball, SJMC and Social Sciences registered a 24–10 victory over the Faculty of Engineering to book a place in the finals.
They will face the School of Business, who secured their place in the final after defeating the School of Law.
Meanwhile, in the netball third-place playoff played on Thursday, 28 May, the Faculty of Engineering, coached by UCU Angels Centre Mariam Asacha, earned a 19-04 deserved victory against School of Law.
