This is the digital news site of the Uganda Christian University community newspaper, "The Standard". The Standard newspaper was established in May 2007 under, formerly Department, but now School of Journalism, Media & Communication.

The Advent (September) semester at Uganda Christian University (UCU) welcomes a cohort of newly admitted students pursuing various courses at the institution. The university held an induction ceremony for all new students on September 26, 2023, to officially welcome and absorb them into the university culture and community. Just as in other higher institutions of learning, at UCU, the newcomers are commonly referred to as “freshers” since they are embarking on a fresh journey in the university. Kefa Senoga had a chat with some of the freshers. Some expectations are shared here.

Every last Sunday of September, Anglican churches in Uganda commemorate a Uganda Christian University (UCU) Sunday (UCU Sunday). UCU Sunday was established in 2017 by the Church of Uganda Bishops with three objectives: to pray for UCU; to mobilize financial resources to support UCU projects, especially infrastructure; and to raise awareness about the university. This tradition spans across Uganda, with every Church of Uganda participating.

Osio Ogbu in The Moon Also Sets depicts a widowed mother whose husband dies and leaves her with children, the firstborn of whom is Oby. The in-laws bother her so much that they want her to forcefully marry Uncle Ben, her late husband’s younger brother, in order to take control of the land. She confidently refuses and apologises for her unfavourable response to their request due to her ideals, dedication, and strength. They become enraged with her, but Mama Oby is preoccupied with her children. She works hard to ensure that Oby attends university and that her siblings receive an education as well. Oby enrols at the University of Embakassi and struggles greatly to adjust to the modern environment that is so different from theirs.

In 2002, when  the  UCU Department of Mass Communication started with only one undergraduate degree program, it was not easy to envisage this level of transformation. At that time, 21 years ago, the department had  no academic staff with a PhD.

Uganda Christian University (UCU) has launched a PHD programme in the fields of journalism, media, communication, and business ministration. This followed the accreditation of the programmes on August 21, 2023, by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), a board gazetted by the Ugandan government to monitor services provided by institutions of higher learning.

Organised by the 25th Guild Government, this year’s event has been aptly named “the Guild Tuition Run.” It is scheduled to take place on October 21, 2023, promising to bring together the UCU community and participants from far and wide at the institution’s main campus. With a shared commitment to the cause, this run aims to raise vital funds for students facing financial challenges, reaffirming UCU’s dedication to making education accessible and fostering a spirit of unity and support among its members.
