UCU Lady Canons opened their title defense at the Association of Ugandan University Sports basketball championship with a dominant win over Kyambogo University at the UCU court 2.
UCU delegation touched down in Brasília on the night of 12 November after a long flight from Entebbe. Both the men’s and women’s teams arrived safely and settled into the athletes’ village ahead of Thursday’s official opening. Their arrival followed weeks of preparation that started immediately after they qualified at the continental championships.
To qualify for the tournament, both the UCU Lady Canons and Canons defeated the United States International University-Africa (USIU) in a qualifying tournament hosted by Makerere University at HAMZ Stadium, Nakivubo, earlier this year, and USIU qualified for the World Cup as runners-up.
Despite a strong effort from captain Ibanda Lwabanga, UCU failed to hold off a late surge from the Rockets, marking a frustrating start to the new campaign.
As the National Basketball League (NBL) 2025 season approaches, the UCU Canons and UCU Lady Canons have bolstered their rosters following key departures. The league is set to tip off on March 21st, with UCU teams focused on rebuilding and remaining competitive.
The UCU Lady Canons, last season’s runners-up, will open their campaign on Sunday, March 23, against Miracle Ravens at Lugogo Indoor Stadium. Their first home game at UCU-Mukono will be on Saturday, April 5, against Nabisunsa.

However, the UCU men’s football team faced heartbreak in the quarterfinals, drawing 0-0 against Kampala University (KU) in regulation time but losing 5-4 in a penalty shootout. The Lady Cardinals are set to battle it out with Makerere University.
