As the new semester unfolds at Uganda Christian University (UCU), the Fitness Club is taking a fresh approach to student wellness by introducing a cycling program aimed at enhancing physical fitness and fostering social connections among students.

Over the past two years, the UCU Fitness Club has rolled out various initiatives  designed to help students achieve their fitness goals. This semester, the club is shifting  its focus from traditional gym workouts to include outdoor cycling events, moving away  from conventional 30-day fitness challenges.

The initiative was introduced by the Health Club, and its head, Charles Lwanga Miiti, a graduating student majoring  in Accounting and Finance. He highlighted the dual benefits of cycling: it promotes  fitness while also generating a small revenue stream for the club through participation  fees.

“Cycling not only helps students stay active but also makes navigating the campus  easier,” Miti stated.

Students have responded positively to the new program. Ritah Nakimbugwe a student in  Biological Sciences, shared her enthusiasm for cycling, stating,

“I had never tried  cycling since childhood, but this opportunity allowed me to learn from friends. By the  end of the day, I was able to ride, and it’s been one of the best exercises for me.” said Nakimbugwe.

Travis Arinda, a student studying Physical Sciences, echoed this sentiment, calling  cycling “interesting and refreshing.”

He also emphasised the importance of activities that  encourage social bonding, noting that cycling provides an excellent platform for  students to connect outside of the classroom.

As the semester progresses, the Fitness Club plans to expand its cycling events,  encouraging even more students to join in and reap the benefits of an active lifestyle.
