Nankya Shadia Leaves UCU After 5-Year Stint

    By Michael Ainomugisha.

After five seasons of anchoring the UCU Lady Cardinals’ defense, Nankya Shadia has announced her departure from the club after five years of service. Nankya, who joined UCU in 2019 from Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga, quickly rose through the ranks to become a key figure in the team.

Following the departure of former captain Hasifah Nassuna, Nankya stepped up to lead the Mukono side with determination and grace.

Now, Nankya is set to embark on a new chapter in her football career by joining Egyptian Women’s Premier League 2023-2024 champions TUT FC, also known as Tutankhamun.

During her time at UCU, Nankya was known for her exceptional defensive skills and leadership on the field. Her contributions were instrumental in guiding the Lady Cardinals through numerous seasons, including some of the most challenging periods the team has faced. Her presence both on and off the pitch has left an indelible mark on the club.

Reflecting on her time with UCU, Nankya expressed mixed emotions about her departure. “I’m delighted to let you know that I’ve gotten a new home. But on the other hand, leaving a place that has been home for five years is really so, so sad,” she said.

The club CEO also bid farewell to the former captain.

“The team will undoubtedly miss her services, and it’s sad to lose a player with her pedigree.” However, I’m also pleased that she has the chance to further her football career because I think she has the ability to play to even higher levels.” said Nabulobi Mercy.

Nankya further promised to keep her former club at heart.

“I’ll be proud to tell everyone that being part of the UCU community has given me the best experiences in life. I thank everyone for the unlimited support. I will always treasure the moments and will always be there to hear them out still, even where I am.”

Her departure marks the end of an era for the Lady Cardinals, who are now in preparation for the 2024-25 FUFA Women’s Elite League.

The club also issued a statement, expressing their gratitude for Nankya’s remarkable leadership and dedication over the years.

“As you embark on an exciting new journey, TUT FC, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude for the remarkable leadership and dedication you’ve shown over the past 5 years.” Read the statement.
