The Vice Chancellor of Uganda Christian University (UCU) Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi today visited the Anglican Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo to assess the ongoing development works being undertaken by the university. Accompanied by other UCU staff members who are part of the Organising Committee of the celebrations, Mushengyezi visited the newly constructed washroom facility, walkways, the main pavilion, the museum and other facilities within the premises that are being developed ahead of the celebrations.

“We’re very happy about the progress being made here and I believe by mid-May, most of the works will be completed.”

During his address to the Press, Prof. Mushengyezi also revealed that another contract was signed with Standard Signs to develop the signage at the site. This contract includes installation of a digital billboard. “Even as you drive-by you will be able to see the proceedings of the Martyrs Day celebrations,” he said.

Prof. Mushengyezi and the DVC Finance Mr. David Mugawe accompanied with some engineers and staff members inspecting the main Pavilion in the shrine this afternoon

Mushengyezi also stated that there is still a huge financial gap to cover in order to complete the preparatory works. “Our desired budget is 4 billion, so far we have 3 billion,” Mushengyezi said. This amount was raised through a contribution of shs.2 billion that was made by the government of Uganda as well as a contribution of shs.1 billion made by the university itself.

UCU is jointly reaching out to friends and partners with Vision Group, which is also the lead media partner to help them raise funds to host the celebrations. “Many of them have promised that they will reach out in kind or in cash,” Mushengyezi said. The celebrations will be held under the theme “Christ Our Peace: Breaking the Walls, Healing the Nation”
