UCU Canons set for 2026 NBL tipoff

Uganda Christian University Canons will open their 2026 National Basketball League season on 8 February against Uganda Martyrs University Flames at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The fixture comes at a pivotal time for the Canons, who enter the new campaign with changes to their roster and the challenge of replacing key departures.

New additions include guard James Osinde from Division One side Watoto Basketball. Forward Majok Deng Dit joins from iHoops Basketball Club. Big man Philip Owili, who trained with the team last year but was not registered, will feature this season.

Assistant captain Zechariah Ekirapa said the Canons are targeting a return to the finals.

“Our focus is making it back to the finals. We want to play with aggression, communicate well, and push the ball in transition,” he said.

The Canons face UMU Flames, winners of last season’s Division One title, on Sunday 8 February at 6 pm. Their second outing will be a test against defending champions Namuwongo Blazers on Friday 13 February.

Head coach Nicholas Natuhereza said the team is ready for the new season but acknowledged the questions surrounding the departure of center Joel Kayiira.

“We look forward to the season. With Joel leaving, there are many questions, but I am excited for the players who will get bigger opportunities,” he said.

Natuhereza added that improvement must come from the experienced core.

“I expect the players who were here last season and the one before to raise their level. The younger players will help, but the responsibility sits with the older group,” He added.

The Canons also lost forward Carl Loum, who left the team ahead of the season.

With new faces stepping in and senior players expected to carry the load, the Canons begin the 2026 campaign seeking another deep playoff run.
