Uganda Christian University (UCU) started their defense of the Pepsi University football league by defeating Victoria University by two goals to nil.

The tenth season of the Pepsi University football league officially began with defending champions UCU hosting league debutants, Victoria University in Mukono.

Two goals in each half by Ssekandi Enock and Oforywroth Isaac were enough to clinch the three points for the Mukono-based side against the side from Kampala.

Despite a massive turnover in the squad that won the title in 2019, the Cardinals were still able to perform at an elite level as they dominated the game for large periods.

Cardinals head coach Mwera Jimmy was pleased with his side’s performance and insists that the side will improve as they will look to defend their title.

“I was pleased with the team’s performance, it was enough to win the game, but we can only improve, more intensity is needed as we progress in the competition”, he says.

Victoria University head coach, Amango Emmanuel is proud of the team’s performance after their tournament debut and is encouraged that it will be a good season.

“I am proud of the team’s performance after our tournament debut, it was not easy since we were away from home, but am confident that we will have a good season”, he says.

Cardinals captain, Gaganga Geoffrey insists that the team will only get better despite the win as there is always a win for improvement.

“We missed very many goal-scoring chances and it is something we will look to improve on as we plan on defending our title”’ he says.

UCU Captain, Gaganga Geoffrey was an inspirational in their side’s win against Victoria University.

Victoria University winger, Kacey Mark Kasozi says that this defeat will only make the team better as they look to navigate their first season.

“Experiences like today will only bring us together as a team and we will bounce back stronger in our next game as we look to make this a successful season”, he says.

Uganda Christian University sits top of group A after their win with games against Kumi University and the International University of East Africa to follow while Victoria University sits bottom.
