UCU Storm Past Nkumba to Reach AUUS Semi-Finals

Uganda Christian University football team booked a place in the semi-finals of the AUUS Games after a 2–0 win over Nkumba University at the UCU Old Pitch.

UCU Cardinals approached the quarterfinal with several changes from the side that faced Bugema University. Senior players Isaac Offoyirowth and captain Patrick Ogola started on the bench as UCU struggled to settle early in the game.

Nkumba controlled possession in the opening stages, while UCU searched for rhythm. The hosts gained momentum late in the first half after winger Bashir Wandawa replaced midfielder Ivan Kisembo, adding pace on the flanks.

UCU returned for the second half with clear attacking intent. Coach Jimmy Kintu reshaped the team by introducing Regan Ssekisambu, Offoyirowth, and Geoffrey Oyaka. The changes lifted UCU’s tempo and pushed Nkumba deeper into their half.

The breakthrough came after Ogola’s introduction. UCU won a free kick a few yards outside the box following a foul on striker Kaboole Levi. Apenyo Isaac rose highest to head the ball past the Nkumba goalkeeper and put UCU ahead.

Minutes later, Kaboole Levi won an aerial duel and laid the ball into the path of Oyaka. His delivery found Ssekisambu, who finished calmly to seal the win and send UCU into the semi-finals.

Captain Patrick Ogola said character defined the performance.
“We emphasised one thing: character. Football everyone can play, but the one with the most character takes it all. That is what we showed in the second half, and that is why we scored the two goals,” Ogola said.

He also reflected on past setbacks, especially on this stage and the tournament.

“The last time we hosted, we were knocked out in the quarterfinals by Bugema. When you host, expectations are high. This time, we learned from our mistakes and we aim to do better against our next opponents,” he said

On facing Nkumba, who beat UCU in a previous UFL final, Ogola admitted the motivation ran deep.

“As a sportsman, I would say it was revenge. We have met many times before. This time, we were ready,” he remarked.

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Rev. Prof. John Kitayimbwa praised the team’s effort.
“A lot of teamwork, spirit, skill, and belief. Coach, thank you for preparing the team well. We are excited and we will support you all the way,” he said.
