Security cameras installed in UCU residence halls

The administration of Uganda Christian University (UCU) has started installing security cameras in the corridors of students’ residence halls of Sabiiti and Nsibambi for females and males, respectively.

According to Denis Jackson Komaketch from University ICT Services (UIS), the person heading the deployment, the purpose of the cameras is to address concerns about theft that have occasionally been reported by students living in these halls.

“We started with the outdoor cameras but due to the constant cases, we decided to add some in the hallways,” said Komaketch. Earlier, racks were set up in which the cameras and other equipment were to be put to keep them safe.

“This was a tough decision because we had to choose between security and privacy, so we decided to go with security,” Komaketch added.

Some students have welcomed the move, saying it will make them feel safer knowing that there is increased monitoring in the halls, while others are anxious to see how the system will work once the installation is completed.

“I am really happy that cameras are being put in place because my laptop and phone were stolen from my room last year so l believe we are going to have better security,” said Fatuma Mwonda.

Isaac Ogusul also from the UIS department, assured students that the cameras are only being installed in common areas such as hallways and not inside private spaces like rooms or bathrooms.

“Once this process is complete, our hopes are high that these new security measures will help create a safer and more secure living environment for students on campus,” Ogusul said.
