As the new semester begins at Uganda Christian University (UCU), the institution has welcomed its first-year students with an elaborate orientation ceremony. Held on Friday, 17th May 2024, in the prestigious Nkoyoyo Hall, the event marked the official start of their academic journey at UCU. Scheduled from 8 am to 12 noon, the orientation provided a comprehensive introduction to university life.

The gathering opened with a warm welcome to the new students, who were informed that their journey in this “centre of excellence in the heart of Africa” had officially begun. The university legal team’s representative took the stage to guide the students through UCU’s policies, emphasizing the importance of familiarizing themselves with the Student Code of Conduct. “Understanding and adhering to these guidelines is crucial for a smooth and successful experience at UCU,” she stressed.

Throughout the morning, a series of speakers addressed the students on a variety of pertinent topics. These included discussions on building their net worth, balancing campus life and academic responsibilities, mental health, and relationships. Each speaker provided valuable insights and advice, aiming to equip the students with the tools they need to thrive both academically and personally.

A highlight of the event was a talk on safety and security by Assistant Superintendent Dickson Tah, the Officer in Charge of the UCU Police Station. He assured the new students of their safety on campus, noting that UCU has its own police station operating 24/7. “Our primary goal is to keep all students safe and away from harm’s way,” Superintendent Tah affirmed, encouraging students to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activities immediately. On top of security, he addressed the students in a more parental manner and encouraged them to listen to their parents and guardians because they have more experience than they do. “Follow what your elders tell you because they have seen it all or at-least they have been your age at one point.” Superintendent Tah said

The orientation also included interactive sessions where students could ask questions and seek clarification on various issues. These sessions were designed to help students feel more at ease and to ensure they had a clear understanding of what to expect during their time at UCU.

One of the new students, Sarah Akello, expressed her excitement about starting her journey at UCU. “The orientation was incredibly informative. It’s comforting to know that there is a strong support system here, from mental health resources to campus security,” she said.

The event concluded with a call to action from the university administration, encouraging students to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them at UCU. “Your journey here is just beginning,” one administrator remarked. “Embrace it with an open mind and a commitment to excellence.”

As the first-year students embark on this new chapter, the university community stands ready to support and guide them, ensuring that their time at UCU is both enriching and transformative. With a robust orientation behind them, these new members of the UCU family are well-prepared to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
