Uganda Christian University’s (UCU) annual five-kilometre Tuition Run attracted a bigger turnout than last year and raised more than Shs50 million on Saturday, despite rainfall during the event.
Organized by the 28th UCU Guild Government in collaboration with the Directorate of Student Affairs, the run brought together members of the university community to raise funds for students struggling and failing to pay tuition fees.
Although rain delayed the start of the run until approximately 9:20 a.m., participants turned up with high spirits and took part in the event despite the wet weather.
Speaking at the event, UCU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi expressed concern about students dropping out because they could not afford tuition.
“It pains us to see them drop out of their program,” Mushengyezi said, referring to students who encounter tuition difficulties in their second, third or fourth year of study.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who was expected to attend as the guest of honour, was unable to attend and sent a representative in her place. She contributed Shs20 million towards the initiative, which formed part of the total amount raised.
The event was attended by the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellors for Finance and Academic Affairs, among other university officials. Participants also received refreshments, while security arrangements remained in place.
The larger turnout compared with last year, despite the rain, highlighted the university community’s continued participation in efforts to support students facing financial difficulties.
