PDR emerged champions of the inter-hostel football tournament organised by the 28th Guild Parliament after defeating Noble Hall 3-2 in a closely contested final on Sunday.
The tournament, which attracted six teams, was aimed at strengthening relations between resident and non-resident students through sports.
PDR and Noble faced off in the final after a series of play-off matches that began on Saturday, September 26, at the university’s main football pitch.
In one of the opening matches, Buffalo Hall and Nsibambi Hall played to a goalless draw at full time, with both teams advancing to the next round.
Other participating teams were Nsemirwe, Elite and Noble halls.
PDR proved the stronger side in the final, scoring three goals against Noble’s two to secure the title. Noble finished runners-up, earning silver.
Speaking after the tournament, Hon. Amooti James Ategeeka, the Member of Parliament representing non-residents, commended the team representatives and fellow legislators for mobilising students to participate in the games.
He recognised the efforts of Hon. Keith Kirya, Hon. Mark Kaweesa, Hon. Celine Natasha, Hon. Gladys Achen and Hon. Esther Namwanje, among others, in ensuring the tournament’s success.
Meanwhile, Hon. Joseph Kalyango, the non-residents’ representative in Parliament, thanked the university administration, coaches and team captains for their commitment to promoting sports and strengthening relationships among students.
Kalyango said the residents’ MPs planned to organise more sporting activities in the coming weeks, beginning with a match between Nsibambi and PDR.
He added that awards would be presented to the competing teams and outstanding individual players in recognition of their performances.
The tournament forms part of efforts by the Guild Parliament to promote student engagement, teamwork and unity through extracurricular activities.
