The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda (COU) His Grace, the Most Reverend Stephen Kazimba Mugalu has informed the public that the Martyrs day celebrations at the Anglican Site in Namugongo will be animated scientifically.
This will be done in response to the worrying concerns surrounding the outbreak of ebola. “We will have the scientific celebrations,” he said. He indicated that the church has formally written to the Ministry of Health to allow them to celebrate the day while maintaining the required standard operating procedures.
He also urged members to continue promoting holiness, sacredness, professionalism and unity. “Look at these Martyrs, they died together, some of them bound in reeds,” Rev. Mugala emphasized as he encouraged the members to foster the spirit of unity.
He made these comments during a visit to the Anglican shrine yesterday where he officially received the completed renovation works undertaken by Uganda Christian University (UCU) at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo.
The Arch Bishop had a guided tour at the site led by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics Prof. John Mulindwa Kitayimbwa who is also the head of the Martyrs celebrations Organising committee and other university administrators.
Rev. Mugalu also gave the university a go-ahead to continue renovation works in the areas that are still being developed upon a request from the Chairperson of the Organising Committee of the Martyrs celebrations, Prof. John Mulindwa Kitayimbwa.
“The Arch Bishop has graciously allowed us as UCU given the interruption we’ve had with the ebola outbreak in Congo, to continue and complete all the ongoing works,” Prof. Mushengyezi said.
Mushengyezi also pledged that the the university will return to the site and complete certain works that were not undertaken due to the short window of time that was alloted for the preparations.
“Next year, we shall be back here and we shall share with you additional projects that we had wanted to do but we couldn’t do because of the short period we had to organize these celebrations.”
