The 28th Uganda Christian University (UCU) Guild Parliament has passed resolutions to increase representation for students in the Faculty of Health Sciences and to participate in the forthcoming National Cleaning Day.
The resolutions were passed during a parliamentary session held on September 2, 2026, at UCU’s Mukono Campus and attended by 15 Members of Parliament.
The motion seeking an additional Member of Parliament (MP) to represent the Faculty of Health Sciences was moved by the current faculty MP, Ali Muganga.
While presenting his motion, Muganga cited the growing number of students in the Faculty of Health Sciences, particularly those enrolled in the schools of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health.
According to Muganga, the faculty currently has more than 1,000 students, making additional representation necessary to effectively address their concerns and interests in the Guild government.
The motion was seconded and supported by the Non-Residents Female MP, Celine Natasha Kirabo, who argued that the additional position would also promote gender balance within the faculty’s representation.
“It will ensure gender balance; since the current MP is a gentleman, the second one can be a lady,” Kirabo said.
Demiano Madundu, the MP representing the School of Journalism, Media and Communication, also supported the motion, saying the Guild should consider the representation and needs of other faculties and student groups.
Madundu specifically highlighted challenges faced by students with disabilities in accessing some university facilities.
“For instance, we have students with disabilities. At times, their lectures are allocated to lecture rooms they cannot easily approach. Recently, we had a lecture for Journalism in the media laboratory located on the third floor of Ham Mukasa Library, but our colleague Lui Theoplus, who moves in a wheelchair, failed to attend it,” Madundu said.
Parliament subsequently passed the resolution to have an additional MP representing the Faculty of Health Sciences in future Guild governments.
Guild to Join National Cleaning Day
The second resolution, which commits the Guild government to participating in the next National Cleaning Day, was moved by Joseph Kalyango, the Residents Male MP.
Kalyango said the initiative would provide an opportunity for students to recognise and appreciate the work of the university’s cleaning service provider, 7-Star Cleaning Company, whose staff maintain the university premises on a daily basis.
“These people clean the university every day. Standing up and cleaning the University on that day can be a respectful way of honouring their efforts,” Kalyango explained.
The cleaning exercise is expected to be spearheaded by the 28th Guild Government in collaboration with various student clubs and organisations at UCU, including the Law Society and Launchpad.
The organisations will mobilise students to participate in the exercise, with the aim of promoting cleanliness, proper sanitation and a greater sense of responsibility for the university environment.
The resolutions are expected to strengthen student representation while also encouraging students to take an active role in maintaining the cleanliness and welfare of the university community.
