We all know the stigma around women’s sexuality and hygiene, despite much awareness. There are many who still feel shy and embarrassed about talking openly about their sexuality, a very similar case to even men.
For many of us, our underwear, especially our pants, are something we consider private and, in some sort of way, sacred. However, we don’t usually think about the health impact of whatever method we use to look after our underwear.
Unlike other clothes, they must be washed often because they are always in close contact with our private parts. While you might think that your underwear is clean after washing it, it could instead pose some health hazards to you.
According to Dr. Denis Anguyo from St. Augustine Clinic in Kansanga, in the New Vision of October 12th, 2021, “due to the privacy attached to undergarments, most people use panty pegs, which they place in either their bedrooms or bathrooms to let them dry.”
Indoors is a convenient environment for microorganisms such as fungus to grow. Such breed in moist places, and this can affect the person wearing the undergarment. ” He said, “The ultra-violet rays of the sun have disinfecting properties that help to sterilize the garments and leave them moisture-free, all of which cannot happen if these clothes are hung behind closed doors.”
It is the moisture they get while they are left indoors that enhances the growth of bacteria and fungi that cause different types of diseases, including ringworm infection, urinary tract infection, and pubic skin diseases that cause itching, swelling, redness, and burning sensations around their private parts.
Vanessa Kyalimpa, a second student pursuing a bachelor’s in mass communication, thinks that people who don’t feel comfortable with drying their pants outside should let them dry for a longer time and then iron them.
How to care for your panties
On November 3rd, 2022, Dr Mwamai Samuel talked to the Daily Monitor and advised on ways one would care for their undergarments.
He explained that for those who are totally uncomfortable with hanging them outside, they should at least iron the middle part after drying, and if left outside to dry, the time should be limited and not too long to cause crumpling.
To avoid staining your knickers, you should soak them in a detergent like Aerial, Nomi, or any other type before washing them. This helps you to remove any stains and makes the washing much easier.
Don’t mix the coloured pants with those that are plain coloured. Colored underwear should always be washed in color-safe washing detergent.
Use panty liners just after your monthly periods. The liners will keep you fresh while also preserving the color and longevity of your panty.
Be mindful of how long you are using your panties. Do you wait until they have lost elasticity, color, and shape? Dr. Mwamai says panties should not be used beyond three months because, after that time, they have served their purpose.
Dr. Mwami’s advice on buying cotton panties is that cotton easily absorbs the sweat compared to other materials.
