The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has returned to push the School of Business programs to become more professional with a globally recognized accreditation.

Charlot Kukunda, the Head of ACCA Uganda, noted that their desire is to identify themselves and partner with the best universities in the region to professionalise students in their learning period.

ACCA skills and sets professional exams for certified accountants. The UK-based organisation has branches all over the world. In the MoU signed, the school was exempted from 9 papers from the 13 papers on the 3 level program provided by ACCA, for the Bachelor’s of Accounting & Finance and Bachelor’s of Business Administration.

UCU can now teach professional course units with accreditation from ACCA. “It’s the only university in Uganda exempted from 9 papers,” Kukunda said.

A discount of 10% will be given for those who want to carry on with the last stages of professionalizing. A discount of 10% will be given for over 1000 pounds, which is what the course costs.

Martin Angume, the programme coordinator of the Bachelor’s of Accounting and Finance at the School of Business, spearheaded the curriculum review and ensured that the course is accredited by ACCA.

The Dean of the School of Business, Kisenyi Vincent, upheld the school’s effort to have professional character not only amongst the school but the whole university fraternity.

“This opportunity was open to only business students, but it’s now open to the whole university fraternity who are interested in accounting,” he said.

UCU will be accredited for four years. The partnership is going to promote research between the institutions.

Kukunda also noted that UCU will get a chance to publish in their magazines which run on a global scale.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Finance and Administration, David Mugawe, has commended the School of Business for their continued effort towards meeting the University agenda.

“ACCA’s skills and expertise will help us to champion excellence amongst our students, staff and growth of our institutions,” said Mugawe.

Ndyemanya Rosemary Marion, a second-year student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance, says that the MoU is a great opportunity for students to professionalize their courses. “We are going to get discounts to professionalize our careers at a subsidized price,” she said.

Such institutions like ACCA are one of a kind; your certificate is recognised on a global level, she added.
