Uganda Christian University (UCU) and St. Lawrence University (SLAU) shared points in a thrilling 1-1 draw during the opening match of the 2024 University Football League (UFL) on Tuesday at UCU Sports Complex.

UCU took the lead in the 30th minute when Harry Abiti curled a brilliant free-kick into the back of the net, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

However, their joy was short-lived as St. Lawrence University quickly equalised just three minutes later through Ronnie Ziraba, who slotted home after a defensive lapse by UCU.

The second half turned into a midfield battle, with both teams struggling to convert their chances.

UCU’s goalkeeper, Elton Mwidu, was instrumental in keeping the game level, pulling off a series of important saves that denied St. Lawrence the lead.

After the match, UCU captain Elton Mwidu pointed out the need for better communication among his teammates, particularly in midfield.

“We had some issues with communication, but I’m glad we managed to secure a point in a meantime we will work a few issues and get the best results in our next games” he said.

UCU head coach Jimmy Kintu expressed cautious optimism about his team’s performance, noting that many of his players are new to the squad.

“We have a lot of fresh faces with great potential, but they still put up a fightl. I’m happy with the point, but we need to improve ahead of our next game,” Kintu said.

The match also saw a a rough challenge moment when UCU’s Apenyo Isaac was involved in a nasty challenge that saw him rushed for treatment

UCU will now turn their attention to their next group-stage fixture as they seek to secure their first win of the campaign.

University Football League continues this Thursday 19th September as Makerere University take on Victoria University.
