In men’s basketball, the UCU Canons came from over 10 points down to defeat Bugema University 69-67 in overtime and start their campaign with a win after a thrilling showdown.

Speaking after the game, head coach Nicholas Natuhereza praised his players’ resilience as they eventually came down from a heavy margin to win the game.

“We started on a sluggish note and had a big difference to climb back from, but the boys were resilient enough to dig deep and come back with the win,” he told this website.

The weather played a significant factor in the outcome of this game, as it was temporarily halted for over an hour due to the rain while they were on fire and leading 39–19.

In the ladies’ game, the record eight-time champions put the Makerere Sparks to the sword, 86-21, in their opening match of the group.

The defending champions were ruthless as they started from the jump and ended the first quarter with a 34-4 lead.

Tracy Namugosa was the show’s star, scoring 25 points and 12 rebounds, further highlighting her star potential.

“We have had enough practice leading up to this tournament, and we started off the right way and hope to only get better from here on out,” she told the media.

Both teams will likely continue their impressive form on day two of the tournament, with each victory taking them closer to their ultimate goal.
