The Uganda Christian University (UCU) Canons kicked off their title defense in the university basketball tournament with a strong 67-55 victory over Makerere University on Thursday evening at the UCU Sports Arena.

The defending champions dominated from the opening tip, showcasing improved intensity and teamwork compared to previous outings. UCU built a solid lead in the first half, outscoring Makerere in rebounding and transition plays, and maintained control through disciplined defense in the second half. Key contributions came from the frontcourt, with center Joel Kayira anchoring the paint on both ends of the floor.

The win sets a positive tone for UCU as they aim to retain their crown in a competitive field that includes tough rivals.

After the game, UCU player Joel Kayiira expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance. “The boys came out stronger than the previous tournament, and we came to this tournament as defending champions,” Kayira said. “We take it game per game. We have played Makerere, next UMU and KIU, who are tougher opponents.”

Kayiira’s comments highlight the Canons’ focused approach, acknowledging the step-up in competition ahead. Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) and Kampala International University (KIU) have historically been formidable challengers in inter-university basketball, known for their athleticism and depth.

UCU’s coaching staff emphasised preparation and execution as keys to the opener. The Canons’ aggressive start overwhelmed Makerere early, forcing turnovers and converting them into easy baskets. Makerere mounted a comeback in the third quarter, narrowing the gap with sharp outside shooting, but UCU responded with a crucial run to pull away.

This victory extends UCU’s strong recent form in university competitions, where they have established themselves as a powerhouse. Fans filled the arena, creating an electric atmosphere that spurred the home team.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on UCU’s upcoming clashes with UMU and KIU, matches that could shape the path to another championship. With their defending status and early statement win, the Canons appear primed to compete at the highest level once again.

The university basketball scene in Uganda continues to grow, providing a vital platform for young talent to shine before potentially moving to the National Basketball League.
