After years of men leading the Congolese Association, here comes a lady. On Saturday, March 9, the UCU Congo Association saw a historic change of leadership at Uganda Christian University’s main campus. The history of the association was changed as its leader, after years, was replaced by a woman.

Notably, this transition of power coincided with International Women’s Day, as the newly elected president is a woman. Each year, in accordance with Article 5 of its constitution, the association gathers to elect new leaders to guide its future.

Guests included Pamela Tumwebaze, Director of Student Affairs at UCU’s main campus, smartly dressed in congolese, and prominent representatives from various UCU associations, including the President of the International Students’ Association, Richard Chubaka, the coordinator of congolese students in Uganda.

“As the Director of Student Affairs, I want you to see me first as a human being, a mother with a heart who loves you all dearly. We are here to support you,” said Pamela Tumwebaze. She encouraged students to make full use of UCU’s services and resources and expressed her commitment to forging a positive new beginning together.

    Newly elected President Marie Salomé

The Congolese association has come a long way since its inception, and the new president will be the second woman to hold the post since its official inception, following a woman who was elected many years ago.

“It is always a symbol of greatness to see an association exercising democracy that reflects the vision of Uganda Christian University to be the centre of excellence in the heart of Africa,” said Richard Chubaka, the Coordinator of Congolese Students in Uganda. He added that the UCU Congolese Association is one of the best associations of Congolese students in Uganda.

In his address, outgoing President Theophile Bushengula thanked members for their support during his tenure, highlighted achievements to date, and offered his best wishes to the incoming leadership team. He also emphasised the importance of collaboration and inclusivity, saying, “Your journey is our journey.”.

Newly elected President Marie Salomé outlined her vision for the future and the government she will be working with, emphasising  teamwork and collective effort to achieve the association’s goals. She pledged to represent the interests of all members and to uphold the values of integrity and inclusiveness.

The ceremony concluded with traditional Congolese dances and joyful photo moments, leaving attendees with a sense of optimism and anticipation for the journey ahead.
