In a tense final all-Uganda affair in Maseno University Kenya at the East Africa University Games, Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Cardinals clinched the silver medal after falling to Makerere University in a penalty shootout following a tense 0-0 draw in regulation time.
The Lady Cardinals demonstrated exceptional skill and determination throughout the tournament. Jovia Nakagolo, the team’s star forward, showcased her prowess by emerging as the tournament’s top scorer with an impressive tally of eight goals. Her efforts were pivotal in UCU’s journey to the finals.
Controversy marred the final match when Nakagolo netted a brilliant goal that was later ruled out by the referee, sparking debate among spectators. Despite the setback, the Lady Cardinals held their ground, keeping the game level until the shootout.
UCU’s tournament journey was marked by stellar performances, securing victories in three matches, drawing one, and losing two. Makerere University, however, remained unbeaten throughout, winning all their matches, including the decisive penalty shootout.
While the gold slipped away, the UCU Lady Cardinals’ silver medal is a testament to their resilience and skill. Their remarkable run has solidified their position as one of the top teams in university football.
The team will now focus on building upon this achievement as they set their sights on future competitions.
