Uganda Christian University (UCU) mass communication students have launched a campaign to reduce urinary tract infection (UTI).

This campaign started as a class project. However, due to the overwhelming response the students decided to make it available to the entire UCU community.

The campaign targets the increasing number of UTI patients. “UTI is one of the top three most common diseases treated weekly here at Alan Galpin,” noted Dr. Edward Mukoza, head of the department of public health (UCU).

Mukoza explains that the rise in cases is due to the use of dirty toilets, poor hygiene, and sometimes engaging in sexual intercourse with an infected person.

Jeanne Kim Nakibombo the UCU guild health minister has students against retaining urine for a long a time because it may lead to UTI infection.

“Some people don’t that retaining your urine for too long can cause UTI,” said Nakibombo.

She advised students to kindly reach out to a health center incase they feel symptoms like fever, backache, itching in your private parts, and frequent urinating.

“The difficult things are the better things,” Dr. Edward says, encouraging students to abstain in order to avoid UTIs. And he claims it is a potentially fatal disease.

UTIs are inflammatory disorders of the urinary tract caused by pathogen growth that is abnormal. It is a leading cause of morbidity and comorbidity in patients with underlying conditions.
