Uganda Christian University (UCU) has urged new students to make wise choices, take personal responsibility for their safety and fully utilise the support services available as they begin university life.
The message was delivered during the General Orientation for New Students held on Friday at Nkoyoyo Hall. The session introduced freshers to the university’s core values, health and counselling services, security measures, academic opportunities and other support systems.
Ms Enid Mugarura, the Director of Students Affairs, told the students that UCU is guided by five core values. “These values are Christ-centredness, diligence, integrity, servanthood and stewardship. I encourage you to reflect them in your behaviour and relationships both on and off campus,” she said.
Health and wellbeing were also prioritised. Dr Mulinbwa, the Director of Medical Health Services, urged students to take their health seriously. “Complete your medical forms and know that you can seek medical assistance from the university’s health services whenever you need it,” he said.
Ritah Zawedde from the counselling department encouraged students to care for their body, soul and spirit. “Do not try to face challenges alone. Seek help when you are struggling,” she said. She explained that the counselling services provide a safe and supportive environment free of judgment, offering counselling, trauma care, online counselling, seminars, workshops, outreach programmes and para-counselling training.
Security officials reinforced the need for personal responsibility. Mr Jonas Kainamura, the Head of Security Supervision, told students: “Security is a shared responsibility that begins with the individual. Protect your property, use the wardrobes provided and read the security information displayed on university noticeboards. Avoid dark and restricted areas, especially at night, and contact security whenever you face a problem.”
Detective Superintendent of Police Rogers Twesige Walusimbi, the Head of Criminal Investigations at Mukono Police Station, urged students to work closely with the university and police. “Avoid dangerous places, bad company and risky behaviour. Security starts with you. Report incidents quickly instead of waiting for situations to become worse,” he said.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Esseri Kussima, the Officer in Charge of the UCU Police Post, gave practical advice for halls and private hostels. “Lock your doors, avoid sharing keys, be careful about visitors and protect your valuables. Avoid random boda-boda riders and remain alert to scammers and conmen,” she advised.
On academic and leadership development, Dickson Tumuramye, the Head of the Honours College, introduced the college’s programme. “It focuses on academic excellence, Christian leadership, research, mentorship, innovation and community engagement. Develop problem-solving skills, build networks and work as teams,” he said, noting opportunities for research, internships, mentorship and community service.
The orientation also highlighted key services including Hamu Mukasa Library, the E-Learning Centre, Allan Galpin Health Centre, the University Chaplaincy, Finance, Legal Services, Sports and the Students’ Guild.
Annet Namamonde, a librarian at Hamu Mukasa Library, told students the facility supports teaching and learning. “It operates from Monday to Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., except during community worship,” she said.
Officials reminded the new students that university life comes with both opportunities and responsibilities. “Make wise choices, protect your health and property, seek help when needed and make good use of the university’s support services as you build your future,” they urged.
