Akayo secures a point for UCU in final league fixture

    UCU 1-1 Royal Dreamers

    By Michael Ainomugisha

In the final fixture of the FUFA Women Elite League played on 3rd May 2025 at UCU grounds, UCU Lady Cardinals were held to a 1-1 draw at home by visiting side Royal Dreamers.

UCU’s equaliser came in the second half, courtesy of an unlikely source—goalkeeper-turned-striker Anita Akayo, who also captained the side.

Akayo was handed the armband in the absence of regular skipper Catherine Nakiridde, who was suspended due to accumulated yellow cards from their previous game against She Kasese.

UCU’s midfield also took a hit, with Cathy Nassimbwa picking up her third yellow card of the season, ruling her out of this crucial encounter.

With both Nakiridde and Nassimbwa ineligible to play, the coaching staff made a bold tactical decision to deploy Akayo as a central striker and Ritah Adero on the wing to fill the gaps left by the suspended duo.

UCU was without injured players in key positions like Pamela Nalugemwa and Mable Kusasira.

The draw saw UCU finish the season in second place on 20 points, while St. Noa will finish as table leaders of the Elizabeth group of the FUFA Women Elite league.
