“Jonah was a good friend to many, humble, funny, happy and liked joking a lot. He was so passionate about basketball, a hard worker and a great teammate. He was always jolly, very competitive and hated losing,” Mesho said.
Their victory over USIU-Africa in the final extended UCU’s dominance in the competition, having also defeated the Kenyan side in the 2024 and 2025 championship games.
The Lady Canons are chasing a third consecutive Afro Varsity 3×3 title and another qualification to the FISU University 3×3 World Cup.
Uganda Christian University (UCU) teams delivered a dominant performance on the opening day of the East African University Games, showcasing their strength across multiple disciplines. From basketball to football, chess, netball, and volleyball, UCU athletes left an indelible mark as they began their quest for regional glory.

UCU Lady Canons, reigning African champions, are fielding a strong roster that includes Aziida Nabayunga, Aber Bridget, Shakirah Nanvubya, and Tracy Namugosa.
UCU’s journey to the World Cup was marked by a hard-fought victory in the finals of the sixth Afro Varsity 3×3 Basketball Championship, held in Kampala on July 28, 2024. The UCU Canons narrowly edged out Ghana’s University of Cape Coast (UCC) Wildcats, winning 18-16 in a thrilling contest.
Coach Nicholas Natuhereza remains optimistic about UCU’s chances of extending the series to a deciding Game 7, set for Wednesday, September 25, if they win on Sunday. The break, he believes, has given his team the mental reset they needed.
With this win, the Lady Canons are just two games away from clinching the championship, while the Dolphins face a must-win situation in Game Three on Sunday to keep their title defence hopes alive.
