The UCU Lady Cardinals are scheduled to play Gold Star High School in the FUFA Women’s Cup this weekend. This marks the first time the two teams will face each other. This match comes after the temporary suspension of the women’s Uganda Cup due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Lady Cardinals, who were crowned champions in 2018, are hoping to bounce back from a lackluster start in the second round of the women’s league. Having only scored one goal in their previous 180 minutes of play, the team has earned just one point after a defeat to Kawempe Muslim and a disappointing draw at home against Rines SS WFC.
As a result, they currently sit in third place, closely followed by their competitors. With their hopes of winning the women’s league title diminishing, a successful run in the Cup is the only realistic chance for the Ladies from Mukono to secure any silverware this season.
Ashiat Naluggwa, the team’s top scorer, is excited about the prospect of a good cup run and is determined to win the competition.
“It’s crucial that we put our league form aside and focus on being in top form for the weekend, as winning the Cup is one of our primary goals,” she says.
The round of 32 matches is set to take place from February 18th to February 25th. UCU Lady Cardinals won the 2018 edition by defeating She Corporate in Bushenyi.
