Uganda Christian University (UCU) head coach Jimmy Kintu has announced Elton Mwidu as the new captain of the UCU football team ahead of the 2024/25 University Football League (UFL) season.

This decision marks a significant shift in leadership as the team enters a rebuilding phase following the graduation of six key players, including former captains Collins Wesonga, Geoffrey Gaganga, and Godfrey Arijore.

Kintu, who is overseeing a youthful squad this season, expressed confidence in Mwidu’s ability to lead the team through this transitional period.
“Elton has been with the team in the last edition so he understands the culture of UCU football, he and his friends will guide this young group of players,” Kintu said.

With the new UFL season set to begin on September 17, when UCU will host St. Lawrence University (SLAU) in Mukono, the coach emphasised that the team’s focus is not only on the first game but a long-term development.
“We are starting a relatively new project with young boys. Who are hungry to compete but we are already seeing positive progress,” Kintu explained.

The team is expected to face challenges as they adapt to a new playing system, but Kintu is optimistic about the direction they are heading in.
“ We believe in systems and projects. People come and adapt. And we expect them to deliver what we want them to do. With the new young boys, we are planning in the project that at least we will take around three years.”

Mwidu, now in a pivotal role, will be tasked with bringing cohesion to a team that is still finding its footing. As the new leader, he will play a crucial part in fostering unity and guiding younger players as they adjust to the competitive nature of the UFL.

“Being selected captain is an amazing honour and responsibility, but most importantly, I praise God because I know that leadership comes from Him. I’m excited to lead my squad under God’s guidance and contribute to their success both on and off the pitch.” said Mwidu.
He also urged fans to support the team amidst the transition.
“My message to fans is that I am devoted to providing my all and leading by example through hard work, dedication, and passion. I invite fans to support us with the same zeal and passion; together, we can do amazing things” he added

UCU fans will have their first chance to see the new-look team in action against SLAU, a match that will set the tone for the season. “We are ready for the challenge. The fans should come out and support this team as we compete for the top positions once again.” added Kintu.

With a new captain at the helm and a young squad hungry to prove themselves, UCU were last season’s runners up after falling to Nkumba.Mwidu Named Captain as Coach Kintu Ushers in a New Era.
